Overview

Biology is a fascinating subject in which you learn about life on a range of scales from the molecular – for example understanding the intricate chain of chemical reactions that drives photosynthesis – to the planetary – for example understanding the impact of climate change on the distribution of species. Learning biology develops your ability to synthesise large amounts of information, to understanding the relationships between things and to think logically. You will also learn how to plan and conduct complex practical investigations.

Paper 1: The Natural Environment and Species Survival

Topic 1: Lifestyle, Health and Risk; Topic 2: Genes and Health; Topic 3: Voice of the Genome; Topic 4: Biodiversity and Natural Resources; Topic 5: On the Wild Side; Topic 6: Immunity, Infection and Forensics.

Paper 2: Energy, Exercise and Co-ordination

Topic 1: Lifestyle, Health and Risk; Topic 2: Genes and Health; Topic 3: Voice of the Genome; Topic 4: Biodiversity and Natural Resources; Topic 7: Run for your Life; Topic 8: Grey Matter.

Paper 3 (General and Practical Applications in Biology)

Synoptic paper covering any of the course content with an emphasis on the experimental methods used to investigate these topics. (indirect practical skills).

How will it be delivered?

Paper 1: The Natural Environment and Species Survival (2h, 33.33%)

Paper 2: Energy, Exercise and Co-ordination (2h, 33.33%)

Paper 3: General and Practical Applications in Biology (2h, 33.33%)

Plus a practical endorsement based on the 16 core practicals.

GCSE Combined Science grade 6-6 or GCSE Biology grade 6


Successful students will be interested in Biology, logical reasoning and problem solving. Students must have an excellent memory and an eye for detail. Biology is a challenging subject, so students will need to be resilient, persistent and very hardworking
