Studying Biology provides students with the opportunity to learn about life while developing a broad range of transferrable skills; from the observational and analytical when recording and processing data, to the creative and problem solving, when designing experimental work. A confident Biologist will be able to communicate complex ideas and use logical reasoning to support their conclusions.
Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Ecology, Evolution & Biodiversity, and Human Physiology. Higher Level students also study: Nucleic Acids, Metabolism, Plant Biology, Genetics & Evolution and Animal Physiology.
The majority of lessons are inquiry-based, including the use of many lessons for carrying out practical and experimental work. As well as developing knowledge and understanding of the syllabus content, such practical work allows students to develop their manual dexterity and a range of experimental including analytical skills. The Biology Team also offers a residential field course at the start of the October break in Diploma 2 on which students can learn ecological theory and sampling techniques in a range of ecosystems. The field course gives students an ideal opportunity to carry out their Individual Investigation. Throughout the course, students have the option of receiving one to one support in lunchtime Science clinics.
All candidates should have GCSE Grade 6 or above (or its equivalent) in English, Mathematics, at least one Science and one language where studied. Standard Level requirement is 6, Higher Level requirement is 7. Where equivalence cannot be established the School will set appropriate I/GCSE papers to confirm that the applicant is capable of satisfying the academic profile required for the subjects to be studied and the IB Diploma Programme as a whole.
