Overview
The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science provides students with a fundamental
understanding of key scientific concepts in biology, chemistry and physics. The course will enhance the students’ understanding from GCSE and develop their knowledge to a higher level.
The course provides opportunities for students to analyse phenomena and evaluate novel scientific developments. Practical skills and scientific techniques and practices are a central focus of this course with opportunities for students to demonstrate the skills they have gained in examinations and in coursework scenario.
Details
Students will study the Principles and Applications of Science and this together with Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques allows students to develop and embed a fundamental understanding of the principles underpinning biological, chemical and physical concepts. Coursework allows students to research current trends in the aetiology and treatment of disease.
How will it be delivered?
This course is assessed through 58% external examination. The examinable component of this course is taken in Year 12. The non-examined coursework element is completed across Year 12 and Year 13 and is worth 42% of the grade.
Entry requirements
In addition to the general entry requirements for access to BTEC courses, students should also have one grade 6 in science and a grade 5 in mathematics.
