What will you be working towards?

Dig deeper into some of the social issues that affect you as an individual, and us as a country, with an A-Level Sociology course. You will explore the impact of vital social institutions, challenge your everyday perceptions of life and look at the increasingly divisive relationship between the developed and developing world.
As part of the course you might look at why Britain has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe or why so many young people leave school with low GCSE grades. You will need to be keen on reading and thinking about controversial ideas, evaluating conflicting arguments and evidence and prepared to think in an analytical way.

How will it be delivered?
A-Level Sociology is a two-year linear programme assessed through three examinations at the end of the second year. Each examination mark contributes equally to the overall A-Level grade. To prepare students with the knowledge and skills needed for the examinations, students will be assessed regularly using exam style short questions and essays, as well as class activities. Regular feedback on strengths and advice for further improvement to help students achieve their full potential will be provided.
You will need five GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above (including English Language and Mathematics and Grade B/6 or above in a related subject).

Upon completing this course you will be equipped to move on to university, a higher apprenticeship or enter employment. Sociology is an essential component in the study of criminology, social policy, social work, healthcare professions, voluntary and charity work. It is also useful for career in journalism, welfare, the police force and probation service. However, it is useful for any career that involves people because it develops an understanding of society’s influence on people’s opportunities, behaviour and attitudes.
