These Qualifications are designed for learners with an interest in food and cookery. They will provide learners with experience of using different cooking skills and methods to enable them to use these within further education or apprenticeships. They will give them a basic understanding of the skills required for a career in food.


How will I learn?

Students will form part of the catering team at Woodpecker Court, taking an active role daily in providing breakfast, lunch and catering for other events.

What will I learn?      

Learners will be required to successfully complete 4 graded mandatory units:‚Äč

  •  Unit 1 Preparing to cook.
  • Unit 2 Understanding food.
  • Unit 3 Exploring balanced diets.
  • Unit 4 Plan and produce dishes in response to a brief. 

Functional Skills

Learners may be required to study towards English and/or Maths. Following a diagnostics, learners will be offered the most appropriate level Functional Skills qualification(s) below:

  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English (60350581) 
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths (60350556)
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English (60350544)
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths (6035060X)

How will it be delivered?

These qualifications aim to develop or confirm the skills and knowledge of those who aspire to be employed, in hospitality roles including chef, school cook or chef and kitchen/food service assistants. 

The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to: 

  • prepare to work in the hospitality industry and undertake a range of duties. 
  • consolidate their existing skills and knowledge within a food production/cooking role. 

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. However, learners may need to complete an English and/or Maths diagnostic to determine whether they study towards Functional Skills alongside the main qualification.
