What will you be working towards?

Alternative Title BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science
Qualification Type National Award (BTEC)
Qualification Level Level 3
Course type Full Time

In this course you will complete four units that cover a range of scientific skills and knowledge.

Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

The first unit is based on completing lots of chemical experiments and learning the skills behind them. The coursework then involves writing up the experiments using scientific terminology. This is a fun unit where you get to do lots of experiments that you haven’t done before and you will learn a lot of skills that are useful for future jobs, such as analysing data, evaluating the performance of yourself and others, researching and communication.

Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science

In the second part of your first year you will then learn Biology, Chemistry and Physics theory. This will end in three 40 minute exams at the end of the year. This knowledge is a small step up from GCSE and some of the topics are very similar. Students have enjoyed learning this as the focus is more on how we use science rather than just learning theory.

Unit 3: Science Investigation Skills

The third unit of the course will be started in Y13. This is a skills based unit where you learn lots of different experiments for five different topics. The topics include: Enzymes in action, Diffusion of molecules, Plants and their environment, Energy content of fuels and Electrical circuits. This is a very useful unit for learning skills such as creating and testing your own plans, using statistical mathematics and evaluating peer’s work. This unit is completed by participating in a specific experiment which you then complete of write up of in a one and a half hour exam.

Unit 8: Physiology of Human Body Systems

This is the last unit and is coursework based. This is a really good unit if you are interested in going into a Biological career as you will learn a lot of detail on the workings and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, the lymphatic system and the digestive system. This unit also links very closely to other BTEC subjects taught in the 6th Form including Health and Social Care and Sport Science.
