This Level 3 Rockschool course will equip you with a set of music industry skills at a higher level. You will choose from one of four pathways. Performance, Technology, Business or Composition.

You will study modules tailored to your chosen pathway, preparing for further study or a career in the music industry.


Those on the Performance pathway undertake one externally assessed core unit (Rehearsal & Performance) on the Subsidiary Diploma. In addition all learners take an internally assessed core unit (Planning a Career in Music) together with a number of optional units that can develop their skills and understanding of musicianship, repertoire, rehearsal, promotion, and live/recorded performance.

Practical Requirements: You will be assessed as a music practitioner so it is important that you are competent on your instrument. You should also try be part of a group ensemble either in school or out of school to help develop your musicianship and communication skills. You need to be developing your instrumental skills on a regular basis building up your repertoire.  

  Academic Requirements:   

The course content is divided into: 

1. (External Assessment) Rehearsal Skills and Live Music Performance. 30 credits

2. (Internal Assessment) Planning a Career in the Music Industry. 15 credits

3. Additional 45 credits from other units to complete.

Each unit involves coursework, and is graded similar with the BTEC grading system where you will be awarded either Pass, Merit or Distinction. The units will be taught with workshops, educational visits and self-directed learning time, with six hours a week in total. All units will have written assignment briefs to guide you through your tasks and show you the grading criteria.
