Students will study four units over the two years:
• Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science
Structure and bonding leading on to production and uses of substances in relation to their properties. Structure and function of cells and tissues specifically looking at human cells such as muscle and exploring ideas about nerves and synapses. Waves and communication; waves in music, optical fibres in communications and medicine.
• Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and
Techniques (focuses on the practical use of laboratory equipment and the applications of the various techniques)
Concentration of solutions and producing
standard solutions, spectroscopy.
Working in a laboratory, safe working
practices and responsibilities and employability skills.
• Unit 3: Scientific Investigations - a strong
emphasis on the use of practical skills and students working independently to devise their own investigations based around the topics of enzymes, diffusion of molecules, energy content of fuels, distribution of plants and electrical circuits.
Optional Unit - options include
physiology of body systems, human regulation and reproduction, disease and infection, astronomy and space. Students will all complete a common optional unit.
General entry minimum requirements to study three Level 3 qualifications for Hillview Sixth Form are Grade 4 in both English Language and Maths together with 3 other GCSE grades at Grade 4 or above.
SUBJECT SPECIFIC ENTRANCE CRITERIA:
Two grade 4s or above in GCSE Combined Science or Separate Sciences. Plus An APS of 4.25 or above.
