This qualification has been designed for learners who want to work in early years childcare and education.
Students will gain knowledge, understanding and skills across a range of key subject areas: the stages and sequences of child development, children's needs in relation to emotional and physical well-being, the role of the early years practitioner in maintaining a healthy and safe environment for children, safeguarding children and child protection, theoretical approaches to play and learning, the role of play in relation to children's learning and development, working in partnership to meet children's additional needs and child observation and assessment.
The certificate is comprised of seven mandatory units which cover the following key subject areas:
- Child development from conception to seven years
- Children's health and well-being
- Providing safe environments for children
- Child's health
- Play and learning
- Children's additional needs
- Observation, assessment and planning
Students will produce coursework for each of these units through classroom based learning, supported by experience in the real work environment. There is an eighth assessment method which is an Effective Practice Study (externally set and externally marked) which is a synoptic piece of research or 'controlled coursework'. All students are required to
complete 365 hours of work experience over the duration of the two-year course.
General entry minimum requirements to study three Level 3 qualifications for Hillview Sixth Form are Grade 4 in both English Language and Maths together with 3 other GCSE grades at Grade 4 or above.

Learners can progress onto Higher Education or a wide range of supervised job roles in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors e.g. practitioner in day nurseries, practitioner in nursery schools, practitioner in reception classes in primary school, pre-school, pre-school worker, home based chilcare and nanny.
