Qualification Type National Award (BTEC)
Qualification Level Level 3
Course type Full Time

This qualification is aimed at 16 to 18-year-old learners who wish to progress to higher education and/or pursue a career in the applied science sector. As a substantial vocational qualification it provides a broad understanding of applied science to support progress to higher education. It is suitable for studying alongside A-levels and requires the same time commitment as A-level courses.

Studying this qualification will enable learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of scientific principles, as well as those scientific practical skills recognised by higher education institutions and employers to be most important. The qualification also offers learners an opportunity to develop transferrable skills such as problem-solving, research and communication as part of their applied learning.

The course is flexible in that the sixth unit can be chosen based upon the aspirations of the student. The experimental skills that are developed make this a suitable course for those considering a career in practical Science whilst units such as ‘The human body’ and option 6a ‘Microbiology’ or 6b ‘Medical physics’ can be suited towards a future in the health sector.

This Qualification has five mandatory units and one further unit that learners can choose from a choice of three. All units are equally weighted at 16.67% of the final grade. Note that assessment is 50% External (examination) and 50% Centre assessed.

1. Key concepts in science – Written exam (External assessment) 2. Applied experimental techniques – Portfolio (Centre assessed) 3. Science in the modern world – Written exam with pre-release material (External assessment) 4. The human body – Written exam (External assessment) 5. Investigating science – Portfolio (Centre assessed)

Optional (choose one from three)
6a Microbiology or 6b Medical physics or 6c Organic chemistry – all Portfolio (Centre assessed)

The units are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction following the application of compensation rules for the internally assessed units. The overall qualification is graded as P, M, D and D*
