Core Maths is a Level 3 qualification accredited by Ofqual which is the equivalent of an AS-level. Core Maths aims to give pupils the confidence and skills to succeed not only in Core Maths but in using their mathematics in other post-16 qualifications such as Business Studies and Applied Science. Throughout the course students create mathematical models of real life scenarios alongside learning practical skills such as calculating tax and national insurance. It equips them for the mathematical demands of other courses, higher education, employment and everyday life.
The course builds on GCSE Mathematics, taking the fundamental skills developed and applying to real life situations. Problems explored range from; analysing statements made in the media and election results, to modelling an estimate for the cost of resurfacing the UK’s motorway network.
There are two exams at the end of the two years; both lasting one and half hours.
Data analysis, personal finance, modelling and estimation
Critical analysis, the normal distribution, confidence intervals, correlation and regression
The course will focus on problem solving and developing skills needed in real life and for further study.
Grade 4 in GCSE Maths and is an additional fourth subject.
Almost anywhere! The knowledge and skills taught in this course assist in the development of pupils’ mathematical skills and problem solving skills, both of which are sought after by both Universities and employers alike.
Being fluent and confident with Mathematics is vital for most career paths. The Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies will help prepare learners for further study (including Higher Education) as well as the world of work. Most pupils who study maths after GCSE improve their career choices and increase their earning potential.
