Overview

Biology involves the study of a wide range of exciting topics, ranging from molecular biology to the study of ecosystems.  Biology is never far from the headlines either.   It is at the for front of medical research, cancer treatment, stem cell research, genetic libraries, conservation and novel diseases.  The human genome has been sequenced and we know the complete arrangement of the three thousand million bases that make up human DNA.

Our students take the Edexcel Biology B syllabus in which they will be examined terminally at the end of the two years. The course allows for a variety of practical investigations and applications and the main topics covered are : Biological molecules and microorganisms, Ecology, Biodiversity, Genetics, Exchange, Transport and Energetics; a great foundation for a broad range of biological careers and courses.  The content of the course is examined as follows:

• Paper 1 – 1h45m – covers a specific range of Year 12/13 topics

• Paper 2 – 1h45m – covers a different range of Year 12/13 topics

• Paper 3 – 2h30m – Synoptic paper – contains questions that span different topics and tests knowledge of practical skills, techniques, analysis and evaluation

Entry requirements

These are the course requirements for automatic qualification. If you do not meet the requirements you should still apply and we will arrange for you to take a suitability test. Grade 6-5 in Combined Science or Grade 6 in Biology. Grade 5 in Mathematics and Grade 5 in either English Language or Literature.

Biologists are concerned with many current issues. They work in the fields of cell biology, medicine, food production and ecology... and the work they do is vital to us all. Biology is one of the most popular A Level subjects in the country, attracting students studying a wide range of other subjects. Many of these students enjoy the subject so much they eventually choose a biologically related degree course. Others go on to careers in law, computing, accounting or teaching. So, whatever field you will eventually work in, you will find biology a very rewarding and challenging course which will develop many of the skills essential for a successful career.
