Science is a subject that is always in the news. Consider gene technology, global warming, endangered species, GM foods, transplants, forensics, Ebola, alternative energy. The list is endless and is growing every day. Applied Science can ‘stand alone’ as a Science subject and is complimentary to Geography, Psychology, Sociology and Sports Science in addition to the other Sciences and Mathematics.

Year 12 follow the Edexcel Level 3 Applied Science syllabus in which there will be one unit that is examined and one unit that will be internally set and marked and externally moderated by the examination board. The units covered in Year 12 are “Principles and Applications of Science” and “Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques. Successful completion of the Year 12 units is equivalent to 0.5 of an A Level and will result in a Certificate in Applied Science being awarded. Most students carry on studying the course in Year 13 when 2 more units are completed. These students receive the Extended Certificate in Applied Science which is equivalent to a full A Level.
