AS: A one year course taken in Year 12. Two topics undertaken in the AS course. The first Unit chosen (Communism and Democracy in the 20th Century) has two separate topics – Crises, Tensions and Political Divisions in China, 1900-49 and Mao’s China, 1949-76. The second Unit is Conflict and Change in 19th and 20th Century Britain, with the topic being studied The Experience of Warfare in Britain: Crimea, Boer and the First World War, 1854-1929.
A2: This is a two year course, in which students must complete the AS course in Year 12, followed by two further units – one a depth Study and the other a Historical Enquiry. The topics will be chosen in consultation with students.
AS: 100% Examination.
A2: 80% Examination, 20% Coursework.
At least a C grade in History is recommended.
There are many options open to students with History A-Levels, including careers in tourism, law, heritage, teaching, conservation, Government (Local and National), the media, armed forces and police, You could take this course with other advanced level courses or equivalent to prepare for higher education in History or related subjects such as English, American Studies, Politics , Archaeology or more general courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to history by seeking employment in areas of heritage such as working for a museum or within education such as a teacher. The course will also help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
