AS/A2 Level Mathematics are versatile courses ideally suited as a complement to science and engineering disciplines, as well as subjects where the analysis of data plays a central role. For pupils whose study is mostly in the arts and humanities, Mathematics can provide a welcome respite from essays and develop other academic skills. A good Mathematics AS/A2 Level also provides all prospective employers and university entrance departments with concrete evidence of a pupil’s reasoning and problem solving skills. The following modules are available for study at TWGGS.



Algebra, co-ordinate geometry in the xy plane, quadratics, arithmetic series, differentiation, integration.


Further C1 work, logarithms, trigonometry, geometric series, applications of differentiation and integration.


Algebra and functions, further trigonometry, logarithms and differentiation, numerical methods.


Algebra and functions, further integration, vectors, series.


Complex numbers, numerical solution of equations, coordinate systems, matrix algebra, series, proof.


Inequalities, series, further complex numbers, first order differential equations, Maclaurin and Taylor series, polar coordinates


Hyperbolic functions, further coordinate systems, differentiation, integration, vectors, further matrix algebra




Mathematical models in mechanics, vectors in mechanics, kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line, dynamics of a particle moving in a straight line or plane, statics of a particle, moments.


Kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line or plane, centres of mass, work and energy, collisions, statics of rigid bodies.



Mathematical models in probability and statistics, representation and summary of data, probability, correlation and regression, discrete random variables, discrete distributions, the Normal distribution.


The Binomial and Poisson distributions, continuous random variables, continuous distributions, samples, hypothesis tests.



Difference equations, critical path analysis, Scheduling, logic, network flows.

Pupils may elect to do the following options in mathematics:


AS   C1, C2 & S1 (This is Mathematics with Statistics)

A2   C3, C4 & S2


AS   C1, C2 & M1 (This is Mathematics with Mechanics).

A2   C3, C4 & M2


You need to do the Mathematics with both Statistics and Mechanics.

AS   C1, C2, S1, M1 + D1 & FP1

A2  + C3, C4, S2, M2, FP2 & FP3


* Please note that some Mathematics groups are over-subscribed and there is often a waiting list for pupils who wish to change into one. If you are considering studying Mathematics at AS Level, please ensure your place by choosing at the earliest stage.

Your next steps...

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses, such as Economics, Physics or more general higher education courses, or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Mathematics, which could lead onto higher education in areas of Mathematics. With further training there are a number of professions available to a pupil of Mathematics including accountancy, financial advisory services or teaching to name but a few. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
