Many 21st century jobs are international jobs. One of the aims of the A Level is to provide an opportunity for pupils to broaden their studies and to acquire the different skills required by many employers.

Studying a language in the Sixth Form helps to develop communication skills, teamwork and independence. Many of the pupils at TWGGS go on to spend part of their education and/ or career in other European states. A sound knowledge of one or several languages is increasingly important for their future.

The specification is designed to build on the knowledge, understanding and skills specified for GCSE. It promotes progression and provides a suitable foundation for the study of the subject in higher education or provides direct entry into employment. Whatever choice of career pupils wish to embark upon, be it in the travel industry, media, business, working for an international organisation or in banking, the study of languages at AS or A2 Level will enhance their prospects.

Speaking  8-10 minutes - Topic based conversation and general conversation.

AS  30%    A2  15%

Listening, Reading and Writing  2 1/2 hours

AS  70%  A2  35%

Speaking and Listening 11-13 minutes - A discussion/debate on a chosen issue linked to one of the topics.

Listening, Reading and Writing 2 1/2 hours - Translation. 2 essay-writing, one which will be research-based.

Pupils will be required to listen to authentic material. The items may include informal dialogue, news items and interviews, talks or discussions of a more formal nature. Pupils will listen on their own personal cassette or CD player & have control of the recordings.

The reading and responding part of the examination will also be based on authentic texts which may be in the form of a narrative, interview, informative or argumentative articles. There will be a translation exercise of approximately 80 words from English into the Spanish.

The writing exam will be an essay of 240-270 words based on one of the areas of the Guided Studies option. There will also be a research-based essay of 240-270 words.

Teaching is shared by two members of staff in each year group, who use a variety of techniques and encourage the students to become independent learners. An additional lesson with a native speaker will be provided. At school, pupils will have access to satellite TV, videos and the Internet as well as ample reading and audio material for independent research. All materials are authentic and regularly updated.

Pupils will require: a bilingual dictionary (£25 max), a personal stereo for independent listening and an annual subscription to a magazine (combining reading, listening and grammar practice): £18. Pupils are also offered the opportunity to attend valuable conferences in London usually once a year.

There will be opportunities to visit Spain on a biennial basis to the geographical area studied at A2-currently Andalucia, (approximate cost £300-350.)
