Overview

This one-year course is designed to give students the practical and theoretical knowledge required for employment in the aquaculture or fisheries management sector. It will develop a range of employability skills that employers in the industry require. A mixture of practical and theory and is delivered making use of the excellent fisheries facilities. This includes Grove farm fishery and fish farm, the River Bourne, Bourne hatchery and aquarium, enhancing the student experience and allowing them to work with current industry technology and techniques. The course is aimed at those who want to gain employment in the fisheries industry, aquatics industry and aquaculture industry with a view to progressing to middle management or those that wish to progress onto a higher qualification in aquaculture and fisheries. Students are able to access a range of additional learning support, based on need. A range of employability skills will be developed whilst on the course including practical skills, communication, fisheries specific knowledge and development of ICT skills. The course is well supported through the use of virtual learning resources. Students will also get the opportunity to carry out a work placement at external businesses such as fisheries, fish farms and aquarium retail outlets. They will also carry out duties at the College to develop practical skills and knowledge.

How will it be delivered?

Assessment is through a range of styles including practical assessments, photographic and video evidence logs, workbooks and written assignments.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C-D/4-3 or equivalent. This must include GCSE English or maths A-D/9-3 or equivalent. You should also have a keen interest in the subject and demonstrate a commitment to the curriculum area.

Your next steps...

On completion of this qualification, you will have the knowledge and skills to enter the Fisheries industry. This qualification will allow you to progress into a Apprenticeship or a higher level qualification in Further Education. Typical employers include local authorities and public sector organisations such as The Environment Agency, as well as commercial fisheries, water companies, wholesalers and angling clubs.
