Overview

This qualification is worth 3 A levels and would be the only subject you study at Cornwallis, occupying 15 lessons a week of classroom based learning.

Mandatory units are Principles and Applications of Science, Practical Procedures, Science Investigation Skills, Laboratory Techniques and Application, Contemporary Issues in Science and an investigative project. Students then study 6 optional units from a wide selection, 5 of these are fixed by us, these are Physiology of the Human Body, Applications of Organic Chemistry, Microbiology, Practical Chemical Analysis and Biomedical Science.

You then have some freedom to pick your final unit to make the qualification fit your future pathway the best, you can pick from one of five different options.

How will it be delivered?

Four units are assessed by external assessment forming an exam. The rest of the units are coursework based units marked internally by our assessors. 

Entry requirements

Grade 4 in English, Maths and either Grade 4 in Combined Science or two grade 4’s at Triple Science.

Your next steps...

As an alternative to Science A levels for access to nursing, midwifery, veterinary nursing, forensic science or physiotherapy (amongst others) this course is the preferred option. If you are unable to or do not wish to study A levels, the extended diploma gives you access to a wide range of science based or health care careers. Many find this an easer route to their desired career and Cornwallis Academy is one of few centres in Kent offering this qualification.
