ADVICE AND GUIDANCE

Post 16 – Making Choices
Making choices for Post 16 study is not as easy as it seems. There are many things that you need to consider before you make up your mind. We really do understand that some of you will be finding this hard this year, especially in light of Covid. We are here to help:

The decisions that you make for your studies at Post 16 should take into account:
• What career you wish to follow when you leave school
• Whether you want to go to university and what you want to study there
• What subjects most interest you
• What subjects you are good at

Once you have decided on these things you then need to do some research on the subjects that you would like to study in Post 16.
Consider the following:

• I know what level of subject I should be choosing
• I know what subjects will help me to get the university place that I want
• I know what subjects will help me to get the job that I want
• I have spoken to subject staff and other people to help me make my decisions
• I know exactly what I will be studying in each of my subject areas
• I know how I will be assessed in each of my subject areas
• I know how much work I will be expected to do for my subjects

How many of the statements can you answer ‘yes’ to? If you answered yes to most of the statements, then you are ready to make your choices.
It is really important that the decisions you make are right for you. Don’t choose a subject just because your friend is choosing it or because you like the teacher! Making the wrong choices only wastes your time and can sometimes mean an extra year at school!

It is important that you use your time carefully over the next few months. We have plenty of staff on hand to help you make these decisions:

Timeline: Post 16 Courses 2023-2025

• Monday 7th March – Return to School
• Thursday 31st March – Internal option choices to be confirmed
• Interviews, follow up meeting and discussion with P16 Team including Career advisor
• After Easter – Term 5 - Formal offer letters will be posted home

Finally, don’t forget to ask your teachers. These people know you and your capabilities. For further information, don’t hesitate to contact Mr S Bing, Mrs V Wallis or Mrs J Tomkins.
Good luck!
