Welcome to Oakwood Park Grammar School: an ‘Outstanding’ Sixth Form OFSTED 2019

We would be delighted to receive applications for our Sixth Form.

As student leaders of the school, Sixth Formers act as mentors and role models to pupils in lower years. As young adults, they are aiming high. OFSTED rated OPGS Sixth Form as ‘Outstanding’ in our 2019 inspection. They noticed that our ‘students are very well prepared for the next steps in their lives and education; and that they are ‘inspired by ‘teachers who are passionate about their subjects’. As a result, OPGS Sixth Formers will go on to take up places in top universities and blue-chip companies.

The curriculum is varied and offers opportunities for challenge beyond the classroom. We seek to develop our students’ particular talents and interests through options like the Extended Project Qualification which allows them to write novels, sculpt, record music or experiment in the labs. Future medics attend exclusive workshops at The Royal Brompton and Canterbury hospitals. Business leaders of the future are involved in work experience in city firms and are regular beneficiaries of mentors from banking and investment. Future lawyers and politicians find a place in our nationally successful public speaking and debating teams, current holders of both the Queens’ College Cambridge and the Winston Churchill shields. Aspiring engineers benefit from our connection with firms such as Kier, annual sponsors of our Future Cities project. Many of these connections come from ex-students who return to OPGS to speak at our annual Careers Networking event. They return because they have been well cared for by our Sixth Form Team.

Subject Choice

In choosing your subjects for A level you need to find out about the syllabus, examination requirements, coursework and the approach to study. Choose subjects that interest you and think carefully about the range and combination of subjects you would like to study. You may also wish to consider requirements for Higher Education or career paths.

Students should also note that the school cannot guarantee courses will run if there are not enough applicants. It is also possible that, in some subjects, numbers will have to be limited.

Student support

In the Sixth Form, there is a progressive mentoring and pastoral system for students. When they enter the Sixth Form, Year 12 students are supported with the transition through a guided programme of form time activities. These include our innovative Wider World lectures that are given by members of the academic staff on a variety of topics. The lectures encourage knowledge and awareness of a range of topics to enhance their development as students.

OPGS students will also be supported in their transition to challenging A levels, and their new found independence, by their Form Tutor, Year Head, our Sixth Form guidance councillor and a SEND team who offer mindfulness sessions. As a school we pride ourselves on a strong pastoral and academic support program and students are as likely to have conversations regarding their progress with the Sixth Form Leadership Team as they are with their Form Tutor.

Students will be supported with their career and progression routes through a comprehensive Information, Advice and Guidance programme. In Year 12, in addition to regular form time sessions, students will take part in career focussed enrichment days with access to the latest careers software and online resources. We have a strong parent and alumni network to provide work experience and advice. All students will have the opportunity to meet for individual career interviews and throughout the year there is a flexible time allocated for Work Shadowing. In Year 13, students will receive support and guidance throughout the University application process and with alternative pathways if preferred. OPGS students go on to universities and degree apprenticeships. OPGS will ensure that Sixth Formers are kept fully up to date on Higher Education and Employment opportunities, including changes to University Tuition Fees and Degree Apprenticeships.

What makes us different?

OFSTED found that ‘Students have high praise for the ongoing support they receive from their teachers, for their emotional well-being.’ Our Sixth Formers are a pleasure to spend time with and, as a result, staff offer regular residential trips such as to Cern, Washington and Zaragoza. In recent years OPGS Sixth Formers have volunteered in Ghana, Peru, Chile and India.

Students who have been with us since Year 7 are joined by students from other schools in the Sixth Form. During their time in OPGS Sixth Form they support the school, make new friends and leave knowing they have fully developed their abilities and talents.
