About us

Introduction: Thank you for considering the Sixth Form at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School. We are very proud of our Sixth Form programme and our impressive record of results, which has seen students enjoying academic success across the curriculum. However Sixth Form is not just about results. At Queen Elizabeth’s our students have access to a unique range of opportunities to develop their sporting, cultural and outside interests. In addition, they are able to develop leadership skills by making a significant contribution to the running of the school. Sixth Form students participate in a wide range of enrichment activities including a very successful Debating Society, Volunteering, Work Shadowing Placements and the Physics Olympiad to name but a few.

We have over two hundred students in our Sixth Form who are well-supported by highly qualified, teaching staff and an excellent pastoral system, jointly administered by the Sixth Form leaders and 12 dedicated form tutors who all ensure that each and every student is fully encouraged to achieve his or her potential. Students who have studied here since year 7 are joined by students from all over the local area. This adds a new dimension to the Sixth Form, bringing very welcome experience from a variety of school backgrounds. Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School equips all its students with the skills they need to progress to the next stage in their career.

More about us: At Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School we pride ourselves on our excellent academic standards as well as our ability to offer our students the opportunity to develop personal and social strengths and skills.

Student support

Additional support: The Sixth Form staff team is very dedicated to supporting it's students. Whether it is something to do with academics, wellbeing or extra-curricular we will strive to ensure students are being well looked after.

Students have access to a fantastic SEND department if required who can help with a variety of situations. 1-2-1 counselling is offered to students who would like more dedicated support and there are other staff members available to help with social, emotional and mental health issues.

We aim to make sure all students are carefully looked after in their transition to Sixth Form. We provide academic mentoring to ensure that the right skills are being applied early on.

Careers: Our Careers team has up to date knowledge and experience of the opportunities that are available to young people both in further and higher education as well as the world of work.

Staff work with students in all year groups to ensure that they have access to a programme of careers education and guidance, which will enable them to progress and maximise their opportunities for lifelong learning and career development.

We work with an CXK to develop our career work in school.

Bursary: The school has a bursary fund available to students. The fund is calculated on a case-by-case basis and money is allocated to families in 3 separate payments across the year. The money is allocated providing a report is completed outlining the use of the fund. Any students who are pupil premium will be contacted by the school's finance department to discuss the application process.

What makes us different?

Facilities available: The Sixth Form and Humanities Centre, which was officially opened in September 2014 offers a vital bridge between school and university, work or apprenticeships, ensuring that every student has access to high quality teaching and learning as well as opportunities to develop independent study skills and careers enrichment advice. The key features of the new building include:

• A social space - large common room with self-catering facilities for students

• Private study centre, specifically designated for Sixth Form use

• 8 classrooms, which form a new 'Humanities' Centre for whole school use

• The building is located in the heart of the school with easy access to all the facilities the school has to offer.

It is our aim to continue this improvement with the addition of a 240 seat auditorium, which will be used as a performance space, debating chamber, lecture theatre, cinema and assembly hall. As a school we are committed to building for the future.

Our brand new sports hall provides Sixth Form students the opportunity to engage with extra curricular sporting activities, whether this is part of a sports team to represent the school or during Wednesday afternoon enrichment time to take your mind off your academic learning.

The school has recently also completed a major expansion of the canteen which has provided a significantly larger space for Sixth Form students to use as a social study space.

Mr Larter & Mr Finn-Kelcey - Joint Heads of Sixth Form.
