Pupils entering the Sixth Form will be expected to have attained an average overall GCSE point score of at least 6 from their top 6 subjects. They must also achieve a minimum of a grade 5 in either English Language or Mathematics and a grade 4 in the other of English Language or Mathematics, and are usually expected to achieve at least a grade 7 in the subjects they wish to pursue at A level (or related subjects, as agreed by the school). In addition, pupils wishing to take Art or Design Technology will be expected to submit a portfolio of artwork and pupils wishing to take Music will be expected to have reached at least Grade 5 in their instrument or voice.

Offers will be made on the basis of predicted performance at GCSE, with the requirement that the above grades are achieved in the final examinations prior to entry to the Sixth Form and the pupil’s 3 or 4 chosen subjects being accommodated on the timetable, with no group size exceeding its maximum number of pupils.

All offers made during Year 11 are conditional on pupils meeting the grade criteria specified and will only become firm offers upon confirmation of actual GCSE results.

What makes us different?

Thank you for considering us for your Sixth Form studies. TWGGS is a forward-looking school embracing traditional values which aims to provide a full and balanced education for life within a caring environment. The consistent and outstanding academic record of TWGGS demonstrates this but, more importantly, reflects the commitment and qualification of our teachers supported by the hard work and determination of our pupils.

TWGGS is an 11-18 selective girls’ grammar school, where the aim is to instil in each girl the curiosity and excitement of learning. The academic achievement of pupils is one of the school’s principal priorities. The school works to help all pupils obtain, at each stage of their development, the highest examination grades of which they are capable and TWGGS is small enough to enable staff to know the girls well. Girls are encouraged to care for each other with the Sixth Form pupils offering help and support to the younger girls. The excellent teaching, which endeavours to stimulate, help, challenge and extend (but not pressure), is supported by extensive individual monitoring and regular reporting.

Working towards high standards is part of the school ethos which encourages every pupil to achieve her their potential whatever they undertake. Beyond the classroom, TWGGS offers an unrivalled programme of extra-curricular activities designed to extend and challenge girls both physically and intellectually. We have an enviable reputation for excellence in Music, Drama, Debating and Art, with a remarkable number of orchestras, bands and choirs performing throughout the year, alongside a range of dramatic productions.

Sport also features strongly, with team and individual success across diverse sports. The school’s situation in the heart of Tunbridge Wells ensures strong links with the local community and a notable characteristic of the school is the way in which girls develop a sense of personal responsibility to society, demonstrated by the number of girls involved with the Voluntary Service Unit and the enthusiastic support given to fund raising for charities

Most Sixth Formers at TWGGS progress to Higher Education; it is important therefore that they have the opportunities to flourish academically and develop skills to learn independently, whilst in a supportive environment. Life in the Sixth Form brings with it new freedoms (no uniform and also a changed relationship with staff), alongside responsibilities as senior members of a school community of approximately 1000 girls. We still expect the highest standards from Sixth Formers, who rise to meet this challenge daily, providing superb support to staff and younger girls alike.
