About us

Welcome to Hugh Christie School

WELCOME TO THE HUGH CHRISTIE SIXTH FORM.

Sixth Form at Hugh Christie has something to offer all students, whatever their ability. As well as a full academic A level programme, we also offer a range of vocational courses at Level 3. Last year, we introduced the International Baccalaureate Career Pathway which itself blends together vocational courses along with other academic studies.

About us

Hugh Christie is a very exciting place to be! Since the school was awarded Technology Specialist Status in 1994 well over a million pounds has been invested in resources resulting in the use of the latest technologies and teaching methods available to all our students. Our examination results continue to improve year on year and we have also earned the reputation as a “leading edge school” both nationally and internationally.

In April 2010, Hugh Christie formed a partnership (Tonbridge Federation) with Long Mead Community Primary School. This means that the governing body and Federation Principal oversee both schools. The purpose of this federation is to enable both schools to work together more strategically on shared objectives and to develop community partnerships that will benefit children and their families.

In our Ofsted inspection of 2017, we achieved overall status as a ‘good’ school. The sixth form provision is now among the best in Kent.

  Our vision for the school is summarised in the following statement;

• Securing good and moving to outstanding in leadership and management, outcomes, teaching and assessment, personal development, welfare and attendance, leadership and management, safeguarding and outcomes.

• Working to ensure that every child achieves their very best.

• Narrowing the gaps between disadvantaged children and others. We will monitor this by scrutinising the annual report on the use and impact of Pupil Premium funding.

• Providing the edge.

• Developing Leadership and British Values.

• Building for the future.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s education at Hugh Christie School.

Information regarding all the school's procedures is contained within the Parent Information Booklet. This can be downloaded by clicking here.

What makes us different?

Achievements

We are a successful academic Sixth Form. This year all students wishing to go to university achieved a place including Russell Group Universities. In 2019 we have achieved the best result for our top grades, the % of A /A* (or equivalent) grades improved by nearly 10% compared with previous year. More than 60% of grades were achieved at A* to C (or equivalent).

We have successfully completed our first batch of IBCP programme and achieved 100% pass rate.

Vocational subjects continued to perform well, more than 70% of grades secured at D/D* level across all vocational subjects.

Facilities

The school has excellent facilities for Sixth Form students. Specialist subjects are very well resourced. Students have access to a large social area and a dedicated supervised study room.

• A new state of the art building

• Fantastic Photography room with dark room

• Design Tech/Graphics/Fashion facilities

• Extensive ICT provision throughout the college

• Dedicated Sixth Form common room and a separate study area

Student support

Additional support

• Dedicated UCAS Coordinator

• Strong team of advisors providing pastoral care

• Careers advice

• Enrichment activities

• Timetabled study sessions in addition to curriculum time

Community

Sixth Form students are expected to play an active role in not only the Sixth Form community, but the wider school and local community as well. All students take on a Service Learning activity, which could include being part of a social or sports committee, peer mentoring for younger students, supporting a department or participating in an activity outside of school.

Students are encouraged to develop their enterprise skills and have organised visits to Alton Towers, West End theatres, organised their own Christmas party and the ever-popular annual summer prom.

We are delighted each year to welcome international students into our Sixth Form. Over the years we have welcomed students from all over the globe, ranging from Germany, Czech Republic, Norway and even as far as Japan. It creates many cross-cultural opportunities for both our guests and our own students who benefit tremendously from the experience.

Our Students

Ofsted reported that we had “outstanding student-teacher relationships” in 2006 and in 2009 we gained an ‘outstanding’ for our care and guidance in the Sixth Form.

This is an achievement of which we are extremely proud; it underpins our belief that every child matters.

  Student comments:

"Teachers show you how to think for yourself and to use the skills you learn to develop as an individual" - International Student

“It is the student-teacher relationships that help us achieve”. - Yr 13 Student

“The teachers are really good I am hoping to get good grades out of my studies”. - Yr 12 Student
