Welcome to Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School’s on-line prospectus; thank you for considering us for your Sixth Form studies. TWGGS is a forward-looking school embracing traditional values which aims to provide a full and balanced education for life within a caring environment. The consistent and outstanding academic record of TWGGS demonstrates this but, more importantly, reflects the commitment and qualification of our teachers supported by the hard work and determination of our pupils.
TWGGS is an 11-18 selective girls’ grammar school, where the aim is to instil in each girl the curiosity and excitement of learning. The academic achievement of pupils is one of the school’s principal priorities. The school works to help all pupils obtain, at each stage of their development, the highest examination grades of which they are capable and TWGGS is small enough to enable staff to know the girls well. Girls are encouraged to care for each other with the Sixth Form pupils offering help and support to the younger girls. The excellent teaching, which endeavours to stimulate, help, challenge and extend (but not pressure), is supported by extensive individual monitoring and regular reporting.
Working towards high standards is part of the school ethos which encourages every pupil to achieve her full potential whatever she undertakes. Beyond the classroom, TWGGS offers an unrivalled programme of extra-curricular activities designed to extend and challenge girls both physically and intellectually. We have an enviable reputation for excellence in Music, Drama, Debating and Art, with a remarkable number of orchestras, bands and choirs performing throughout the year, alongside a range of dramatic productions.
Sport also features strongly, with team and individual success across diverse sports. The school’s situation in the heart of Tunbridge Wells ensures strong links with the local community and a notable characteristic of the school is the way in which girls develop a sense of personal responsibility to society, demonstrated by the number of girls involved with the Voluntary Service Unit and the enthusiastic support given to fund raising for charities
Most Sixth Formers at TWGGS progress to Higher Education; it is important therefore that they have the opportunities to flourish academically and develop skills to learn independently, whilst in a supportive environment. Life in the Sixth Form brings with it new freedoms (no uniform and also a changed relationship with staff), alongside responsibilities as senior members of a school community of approximately 1000 girls. We still expect the highest standards from Sixth Formers, who rise to meet this challenge daily, providing superb support to staff and younger girls alike.
