Course Summary

This diverse course looks at a variety of different biologically important areas ranging from the microscope, cells to the macroscopic, ecosystems.

It provides an entry point for a range of further study options at University.

Course Details

Covers biological molecules, cells, organisms exchanging substances with their environment, genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms. Energy transfers in and between organisms. Organisms responding to changes in their internal and external environments, populations, evolution and ecosystems and the control of the gene expression.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Exams are timetabled to be taken in May/June time.

There are a minimum of 12 practical assessments which are taken throughout this 2 year course and these are assessed by teaching staff who need to have direct observation of competency in a range of skills (that are not assessable in written exams)

At least 15% of the marks for an A Level Biology qualification will require the assessment of practical skills.




Entry requirements

For entry to this subject a grade 6 or above is required in Combined Science or separate Science.

Also required is a GCSE grade 5 or above in Maths and English.
