Course Summary
The Edexcel A Level Business course is an engaging two-year qualification that moves beyond GCSE basics to focus on strategic decision-making and global business contexts. It's structured around four core themes that provide a holistic understanding of how businesses operate, grow, and respond to internal and external influences.
It's an excellent choice if you're interested in business management, finance, marketing, or entrepreneurship, and it provides a strong foundation for university study in these areas.

The Four Core Themes
The A Level is divided into four main themes, usually studied over two years:
Theme 1: Marketing and People
This theme introduces the fundamental building blocks of a business. You'll learn how businesses identify and meet customer needs (Marketing) and the crucial role of the workforce (People).
Key Topics: The market (mass vs. niche), market research, the marketing mix (4Ps), managing people (motivation, leadership, recruitment), and the role of entrepreneurs and leaders.
Theme 2: Managing Business Activities
This theme dives into the essential functions that keep a business running: Finance and Operations. It's where you develop your numerical and analytical skills.
Key Topics: Raising and managing finance (sources, cash flow, profit), financial planning (break-even, budgets), resource management (production, efficiency, quality), and external influences (economic, legal, and competitive environments).
Theme 3: Business Decisions and Strategy
This theme moves into the strategic thinking that separates A Level from GCSE. You'll explore how businesses plan for the long term and aim for growth.
Key Topics: Corporate objectives and strategy, business growth (organic and external, Ansoff's Matrix), decision-making techniques (e.g., investment appraisal, decision trees), assessing competitiveness, and managing change.
Theme 4: Global Business
The final theme takes a global perspective, exploring how businesses operate in an increasingly interconnected world.
Key Topics: Globalisation, reasons for trading internationally, assessing a country as a market or production location, global marketing strategies, and the impact of multinational corporations (MNCs) and ethics in a global context.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
The entire A Level is assessed via three written examinations at the end of the second year. All papers require you to demonstrate the ability to not just recall knowledge, but to Apply, Analyse, and Evaluate concepts using real-world case studies and data.
