Course Summary
English Language & Literature allows you to study how writers craft meaning across both fiction and non-fiction, while also developing your own voice as a writer. This course combines the analytical study of literary texts with an exploration of language in everyday use, preparing you with critical, creative, and communication skills that are highly valued by universities and employers.
Course Details
· Prose & Drama – Novels, plays and extracts exploring themes such as identity, power, relationships and society.
· Poetry Anthology – A range of voices and perspectives from the AQA Worlds and Lives collection.
· Non-Fiction & Language in Use – Political speeches, journalism, travel writing, memoirs, blogs, advertisements and more.
· Creative & Critical Writing – Crafting original pieces, reflections, and commentaries inspired by studied texts.
· Independent Coursework (NEA) – A comparative essay (2,500–3,000 words) on a text of your choice alongside one studied in class.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
· Paper 1: Telling Stories (3 hours, 40%) – Prose, poetry and re-creative writing with commentary.
· Paper 2: Exploring Conflict (2 hours 30 mins, 40%) – Drama study and creative/analytical writing.
· Non-Exam Assessment (NEA) (20%) – Comparative coursework essay.
Entry requirements
Preferably Grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language and English Literature (higher grades strongly recommended due to the challenging reading and writing demands, however please contact us to discuss).
