Course Summary

Media Studies is an academic course with a strong emphasis on critical thinking, analysis and research skills. It will also provide students with the opportunity to develop practical production skills in filming, editing, website and print design. This A Level specification is broken up into three units. Media Products involves analysing an unseen extract, focusing on the News institution and how they shape public opinion. This is explored across television, online and in print. This examination also involves students to evaluate the progression of their skills from their coursework portfolio. Media in the Digital Age equips students with the skills to apply theoretical concepts and debates to existing media products from across different mediums, ranging from postmodern feminism within the music industry, to the significance of post-colonialism with the British film industry. The final unit is Making Media, which is the coursework element. Students will work individually to fulfil a brief with three constructions: one moving image, one web based and one print. Students who take this subject need to be proactive, not scared of learning new technologies and embrace challenge. The course gives an excellent introduction to the most important aspects of the media and the various career opportunities in this and related fields. If students want to continue with Media Studies in higher education, they will find a great number of degree and other courses offered.
