Course Summary

If you enjoy studying the past both for the fascinating events and individuals and also for the insight it gives us into the present day, then History A level is for you. The study of History trains you to develop the ability to ask relevant and significant questions, assess the validity of an argument, think and write logically, make informed judgements about controversial issues and present a clearly structured argument backed by supporting evidence thereby equipping you for a wide variety of careers. History is a well respected subject amongst universities and employers. The A Level course consists of four units over the two years. Three units will be examination based and one unit will be coursework based. In year 12, you study Germany and West Germany, 1918-89. You will explore political and governmental changes; opposition, control and consent and aspects of life in Germany and West Germany. The second unit to be studied focuses on the rise and fall of fascism in Italy 1911-1946. You will investigate the rise of Mussolini and the creation of a fascist dictatorship; control and policies within the fascist state and the fall of the fascist state. In year 13, you are required to complete an independent historical investigation examining a historical controversy and investigating the work of other historians.
