History is a demanding and exciting subject. It is the study of the people and events that have shaped the modern world. You will become familiar with a range of source materials and evidence as well as how to interpret and write analytically. You will be given the opportunity to argue and debate issues in class and to get to grips with the lives of ordinary and extraordinary people. By the end of the course you will be able to weigh up evidence and communicate complex ideas effectively. The study of factors that shape these changes such as economic changes, social changes and political changes are themes which occur in the time periods studied.

Unit 1 - Breadth Study (40%)

“The Tudors 1485-1603”

Unit 2 - Depth Study (40%)

“The Making of Modern Britain, 1951-2007”

Unit 3 - Historical Enquiry (20%)

An extended essay testing research skills and understanding of change and continuity on a subject of your choice.

Unit 1 and Unit 2– Written examination taken at the end of Year 13.

Unit 3 – Historical Enquiry

GCSE History or an equivalent GCSE humanities subject at grade 6 and GCSE English language or literature at grade 6.

Studying History at A Level gives you access to a wide range of career and higher education opportunities. It is a subject that is well regarded by both universities and employers alike. History combines well with all subjects given the overarching nature of its content, covering all aspects of human development, technology and culture.

History provides an excellent foundation for a number of popular careers including journalism, law, tourism, PR, archaeology and business. The ability to process information and analyse viewpoints and opinions are key skills which transfer into so many occupations as well as providing excellent preparation for a variety of university and further education courses.
