The Extended Certificate in Applied Science is the equivalent of one A level. It is a two year course and is recognised by UCAS and universities.

4 units are studied over two years, these are principles and applications of Science, practical scientific procedures and techniques, science investigation skills and one optional unit which will be selected by the course teachers based upon the strengths and interests of the learners in the group.
Some examples of units studied include:
- Chromatography
- Titrations
- Calorimetry
- Muscles and the skeleton
- Enzymes and the digestive system
- Ecology

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The principles and applications of science unit is assessed through a written exam and is marked out of 90. This forms 25% of the qualification and a pass grade must be achieved. The science investigation skills unit is assessed through a task set by and marked by the exam board. It is carried out in class under controlled conditions and sent to the examiners.

The other units are coursework based and are assessed internally by the teachers delivering the course. This is then moderated by an internal moderator. Edexcel may request samples for moderation.
