Course Summary

This course is designed to engage learners with the basics of business. Concepts covered include personal finance, marketing and the business environment. This full course is designed to engage and challenge learners further within the field of business theory. Over the two-year programme, students will build on the content from the certificate as well as developing their understanding of the themes of ‘strategy’ and ‘managing change’.

This course can be taken as a Certificate (equivalent to 1 A Level) or a Diploma (equivalent to 2 A levels) and can be studied within our Technical, Academic and Professional pathways.


Course Details

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it supports progression to higher education. In addition, employers and professional bodies have been involved and consulted in order to confirm that the content is appropriate and consistent with current practice for learners planning to enter employment directly in the business sector.

The qualification gives learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the business sector that will prepare them for further study or training. This includes the opportunity for learner to choose two units from a selection of options to supplement the mandatory units which reflect the key topics in business:

• marketing

• business environments

• international business

• management

• finance.points allocated.


How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment is specifically designed to fit the purpose and objective of the qualification. It includes a range of assessment types and styles suited to vocational qualifications in the sector. There are three main forms of assessment that you need to be aware of: external, internal and synoptic.

Minimum of 5 9-5 grades in GCSE examinations including English and Maths

The qualification is recognised by higher education institutions as fully meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses in a variety of areas in the business sector, as single or joint programmes at degree, foundation degree or HND level. When studied with other qualifications in the study programme, learners can progress to higher education on combined courses.

Learners should always check the entry requirements for degree programmes with the specific higher education providers. After this qualification, learners can progress directly to employment, however it is likely that many will do so via higher study. Areas of employment include junior business roles in marketing, administration, finance, events management, HR, marketing and other related areas in the business sector, including higher apprenticeships.
