Course Summary

The BTEC in Creative Media Skills course can help you learn the essential skills and take your first steps towards, considering a exploring and discovering the different jobs, roles and courses in the following industries; Creative Media, Marketing, Interactive Design, Applied IT, Digital Content & Communications industries

The teaching and learning approach is holistic, explorative and integrated, it will give you the opportunity to gain a knowledge of production processes and develop skills in creating digital content.

This course provides a holistic learning experience that balances development of skills with personal growth and intention allowing learners to explore one of the following pathways;

  • Moving image
  • Games
  • Interactive
  • Sound
  • Graphic and Publishing.

Course Delivery

This qualification supports a curriculum where learners continually revisit their skills, adding levels of refinement, sophistication and precision as they progress. It is highly practical, all assessment is holistic, based on portfolios of work and evidence generated through regular attendance and completion of work set.

The process of reflection and evaluation is used for self-development, improvement and to consider areas of strength and interest.

You will have 12 lessons per fortnight, learners will deepen and refine their skills over time, in different work-based scenarios prescribed by the teacher, this gives the opportunity for learners’ to specify their interests, ideas and career or progression ambitions before negotiating a final project in their chosen pathway.

Course Details

The BTEC Certificate in Creative Media Skills consists of one Module;

A] Exploring & Developing Media Production Skills.

This module is taught, then applied in response to a brief set by the teacher, before students negotiate their own applied practice.

Within this module, there are five content areas which reflect the fundamental creative skills running through all teaching and learning, they are developed to give learners valuable transferable skills. The five content areas and assessment criteria are:

  • Investigation
  • Communication
  • Practical skills
  • Development
  • Approach.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

There are two assessment units within the module;

Unit A1: Skills development

Unit A2: Creative Media Project

These are 100% internally set and assessed and evidenced through coursework.

Assessment modules are each assessed against five criteria, which are graded on a scale of Distinction, Merit, Pass and Unclassified. In order to be awarded a qualification, learners must achieve a minimum of Pass in all assessment criteria

The same five common assessment criteria are used to assess all work produced throughout the qualifications. This simplifies assessment and means that it is clear what learners are expected to do to achieve the criteria.

Embedded throughout, these skills include creative investigation and ideas generation, communication, using creative development processes, developing and applying practical skills and using productive working skills and practice.

The Certificate is equivalent to 1.5 GCSEs, If taken as part of a programme of study that includes other BTECs or GCSEs, it supports progression to Level 3 vocational qualifications or academic qualifications in a related discipline.

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with industry professionals to ensure that it supports progression to an apprenticeship or entry level work in the creative digital industries. The qualification also supports learners in becoming more confident in taking ownership of and responsibility for their own direction, work and choices. across the following industry areas;

  • Media
  • Business
  • Marketing,
  • Interactive Design & Digital Content
  • Gaming,
  • Applied ICT.
