Course Summary

IBCP students will take a minimum of three courses of study. All of these will be Level 3 courses (A/AS Level equivalent). The courses will be a combination of vocational BTEC qualification (equivalent to up to 3 A Levels, approximately 10 hours of study per week) and 2 IB subjects (approx. AS level each and studied for 5 hours a fortnight). If you select this subject you must also select two IB subjects in your application.

BTEC Level 3 Business Studies provides students with an in depth knowledge of the Business environment as well as a range of transferable skills (communication, perseverance, self motivation). Recognised as the equivalent of 3 A levels, this course will enable students to successfully transition to the next stage of their career path.

The new specification at Level 3 provides a credible, useful and highly sought after vocational programme of study for students to follow, providing a high degree of relevance for both continued study and the world of work.

Students will get the opportunity to study a range of topics from Business Marketing, Environment, Support, Accounting, Finance and Recruitment and Selection. The broad range of topics covered in this programme gives a solid foundation of knowledge that students can apply to a range of different Business disciplines at College, University or Higher Level Apprenticeships.

This course is designed for those who wish to gain an understanding of the dynamic world of business. You will explore a range of business services and gain experience through a work placement. On completion of the course you may choose to specialise in one area and continue to study at university or at the College on a HND in Business.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment
Assessment is specifically designed to fit the purpose and objective of the qualification. It includes a range of assessment types and styles suited to vocational qualifications in the sector. There are three main forms of assessment that you need to be aware of: external, internal and synoptic.
Externally-assessed units
Each external assessment for a BTEC National is linked to a specific unit. All of the units developed for external assessment are of 90 or 120 GLH to allow learners to demonstrate breadth and depth of achievement. Each assessment is taken under specified conditions, then marked by Pearson and a grade awarded. Learners are permitted to resit external assessments during their programme.
The styles of external assessment used for qualifications in the Business suite are:
• examinations – all learners take the same assessment at the same time, normally with a written outcome
• set tasks – learners take the assessment during a defined window and demonstrate understanding through completion of a vocational task.
Internally-assessed units
Most units in the sector are internally assessed and subject to external standards verification.
Learners are given opportunities to:
• write up the findings of their own research
• use case studies to explore complex or unfamiliar situations
• carry out projects for which they have choice over the direction and outcomes
• demonstrate practical and technical skills using appropriate presentations and
role plays
