Course Summary

The BTEC in Sport is a two year academic course which provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of Sport. Learners develop an understanding of the sports industry by exploring the different skills required for different career pathways into the industry. Additionally learners will study Fitness Training as well as the Anatomy and Physiology of the body. The course is designed for post-16 learners who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment, possibly in the Sports Industries, as part of a programme of study alongside other BTECs or A levels. The BTEC is both exam and coursework based with nine units designed to cover a wide range of academic and vocational skills. Students will research fitness training and programming for health, sport and wellbeing and will analyse the results to support improvements in a client’s health and wellbeing. Students will learn the functions of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and explore the effects of exercise on these systems. Students will study what makes a good leader, the different capacities of this role, and the leadership skills and techniques necessary when leading activities in different roles. Students will gain an understanding of the requirements of fitness testing and learn how to safely conduct a range of fitness tests for different components of fitness. Students explore the historical development of the rules and regulations in a selected sport, and apply them while officiating. Students will plan, promote and deliver an approved sports event and review the implementation of the event and their own performance. Students will investigate how business operates in the sport and active leisure industry and how it responds to trends and other influences to meet the needs of clients and benefit the business. Students will study the factors that contribute to a skilled performance in sport and examine how sports performers learn and develop their skills. The course acts as a thorough introduction to the most important aspects of Sport and the various career opportunities in this (and related) fields. If students want to continue with Sport in higher education, they will find a great number of degrees and other similar courses available. Careers in Sport do not come easy; it is expected that you have a wide experience of working on Sports events and playing Sport on a regular basis. If students are dedicated and hard-working, their academic and vocational experience could lead them into a career in teaching, coaching, Sport Science, physiotherapy, events manager, army careers, personal trainer, gym instructor, fitness instructor or journalism.

This course is the equivalent of 2 A levels
