Course Details

Module 1 – Development of practical skills

Module 2 – Foundations of chemistry e.g. atoms, amount, redox and structure & bonding

Module 3 – Periodic Table and energy

Module 4 - Core organic chemistry e.g. hydrocarbons, isomerism and infra-red spectroscopy

Module 5 – Physical chemistry and transition elements

Module 6 - Organic chemistry and analysis, e.g. carbonyls and nuclear magnetic resonance

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Papers will incorporate multiple-choice questions, short answer question styles (structured questions, problem solving, calculations, practical) and extended response questions.
• Paper 1 Periodic table, elements and physical chemistry (37%)
(assesses modules 1, 2, 3 and 5)
• Paper 2 Synthesis and analytical techniques (37%)
(assesses modules 1, 2, 4 and 6)
• Paper 3 Unified chemistry (26%)
(assesses all modules)
• Practical endorsement – students achieve a pass or fail. This is independent of their final grade but is recorded on their exam certificate. To achieve a pass, students have to successfully carry out 12 specified practical experiments including a formal write-up.

Entry requirements

Your next steps...

An A Level in Chemistry is a valuable asset to any young person looking to secure a place on a competitive university course and is well respected by employers. It demonstrates an ability to work with numbers, the ability to solve logical problems and to retain knowledge of complex ideas, all of which are skill that employers frequently list among the most desirable in applicant for positions.

Several university courses require an A Level in Chemistry outside of Chemistry degrees, including the range of medical courses, making Chemistry a popular choice at A Level.
