Course Summary

Why Classical Civilisation?

The civilisations of the Greeks and Romans still fascinate us in the modern world. Their literature, mythology, culture, art and architecture are so familiar to us, passed down over millennia, but very few students have the opportunity to study these cultures at A Level.

Course Details

This course will appeal to those who are

interested in history, literature, culture, mythology, art, architecture, and more - in other words, everything

which makes up a civilisation. We’ll have the opportunity to read some of the most influential Greek and

Roman literature, translated into English, to allow all students to access this material. We will also look

at how art and architecture is used to celebrate, commemorate, and manipulate, through examination

of images of power and control. Finally, we’ll examine how beliefs and ideas are not just hypothetical

constructs, but have real impact in how societies operate and organise themselves.

Your next steps...

The A Level in Classical Civilisation goes beyond the GCSE, allowing far deeper study of these periods from a more theoretical and societal level than previously. Studying this A Level supports and reinforces many of the analytical and evaluative procedures which can also be found in subjects like English Literature and History, as well as providing many of the skills required to study a Classical subject at university level. This subject provides a model for how to examine societies’ values, beliefs, and power structures, through encouraging students to hold up a mirror to their own context. Students who specialise in Classical Civilisation can continue to study a range of different languages and classical subjects, but will also find it useful for careers such as journalism, law, biology, education, writing, and many more.
