Course Summary

Course Aims

Students who study Economics will apply economic theory to support analysis of current economic problems and issues, and we will encourage students to appreciate the interrelationships between microeconomics and macroeconomics. AQA have worked closely with teachers and universities to develop engaging and up-to-date content so that students can relate what they are learning to the world around them – locally, nationally and globally.

Individuals, firms, markets and market failure

1 Economic methodology and the economic problem

2 Individual economic decision making

3 Price determination in a competitive market

4 Production, costs and revenue

5 Perfect competition, imperfectly competitive markets and monopoly

6 The labour market

7 The distribution of income and wealth: poverty and inequality

8 The market mechanism, market failure and government intervention in markets

The national and international economy

9 The measurement of macroeconomic performance

10 How the macroeconomy works : the circular flow of income, AD/AS analysis, and related concepts


How will it be delivered and assessed?

The course is 100% examination based. Paper 1 links with elements 1-8 above and is a written exam of 2 hours and worth 33.3% of the final grade. Paper 2 links with elements 9 - 14 above and is also a written exam of 2 hours and worth 33.3% of the grade. Paper 3 looks at all elements above from 1 - 14 and is a 2 hour exam which is worth the remaining 33.3% of the grade. Papers feature multiple choice, data response and case study questions.


Entry requirements

In addition to the general requirements for entry onto the course, students will require at least a grade 5 in English and maths.

Economics opens up an exciting world of opportunities for students. Students can go on to study economics at university or seek an opportunity with a financial company through an Apprenticeship Scheme. Fields of employment include Accountant, Actuarial Analyst, Chartered Accountant, Data Analyst, Economist, Finance and Banking, Financial Risk Analyst, Financial Planner, Forensic Accountant, Investment Analyst, Statistician, Stockbroker.
