Course Summary

If you enjoy reading a wide range of texts, literary analysis and linking these to other theories and your own interpretations then you will enjoy this course. You will deepen your appreciation and understanding of English literature, including its changing traditions.

Component 1 – Drama: Students will study one Shakespeare text and one other drama text on a specific genre.

Component 2 – Prose: You will study two texts in a chosen theme, one will be pre – 1900, one a modern text.

Component 3 – Poetry: Students study will study poetic form, meaning and language from a selection of post-2000 specified poetry and a specified range of poetry from: either a literary period (either pre- or post-1900) or a named poet from within a literary period.

This course expects you to read widely and independently set texts and others that you have selected for themselves. You will engage critically and creatively with a substantial body of texts and ways of responding to them. Students will develop and effectively apply their knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation and explore the contexts of the texts they are reading and others’ interpretations of them.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in English Literature and Language consists of three externally examined papers and one non-examination assessment component.

Entry requirements

Grade 5 in English, grade 4 in Maths and at least three other subjects at grade 4+.
