SYLLABUS – AQA (www.aqa.org.uk)

COURSE DETAILS - The AS/A2 course develops the four language skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) which were practised at GCSE level, but places far greater emphasis on grammatical accuracy, writing and oral fluency. By the end of the course, students should be able to express themselves with confidence on a whole range of issues. At AS level these include: media, popular culture, healthy living/lifestyle, family/relationships. At A2 topics covered include: the environment, the multicultural society, contemporary social issues, cultural topics.

AS UNITS
Fr01 - Listening, Reading, Essay Writing (70% of AS/ 35% of A level)
Fr02 - Speaking (30% of AS/ 15% of A level)

A2 UNITS
Fr03 - Listening, Reading, Essay Writing, Translation (35% of A level)
Fr04 - Speaking (15% of A level)

ASSESSMENT - Students are assessed by a range of methods that include: listening and reading comprehension exercises, essay writing and a 15 minute speaking examination.

VISITS TO FRANCE – Students opting for French at AS/A2 level will have the opportunity to go to Paris and/or the South of France as part of their studies to help them develop their linguistic skills and understanding of French culture and society

Students must have studied GCSE French and preferably achieved at least a grade B.

All sectors of commerce and industry are becoming increasingly aware of the need to be able to communicate successfully and a thorough knowledge of a foreign language can open up many career avenues in fields as diverse as marketing and PR, finance and banking, media, engineering, the Civil Service, teaching and, of course, translating and interpreting. You could take this course to complement other advanced level course or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in French, which could lead onto higher education in French, Languages or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to French or Languages such as a Teacher, Translator, or you may wish to use your French to study or work over in France. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the travel and tourism sector. You could take this course with other advanced level course or equivalent to prepare for higher education in French, Languages or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to French or Languages such as a Teacher, Translator, or you may wish to use your French to study or work over in France.
