What is the course about?
Geography is the study of the Earth’s landscapes, people, places and environments. The course develops and extends the knowledge and skills required to be an active geographer. The course divides into physical and human geography but there is an increased focus on where these overlap.
For whom is the course suitable?
Geography combines well with both Humanities and Science subjects as well as Economics, Business and Social Sciences and can be an option for all students in the Sixth Form, following a GCSE Geography course and attaining at least a grade 6 in the geography GCSE. A good standard of English and Maths is required to manage the essay writing and statistical content of the course.
Teaching Methods and Homework commitment
A residential fieldwork component is an essential part of the course and attendance by all students is compulsory, to gather data needed for the individual investigations. There is a cost involved in this which is usually subsidised by the school where possible. Students in receipt of a bursary will be entitled to help with this cost. Students are expected to keep up to date with their work, meet deadlines and to do up to 5 hours of independent study in addition to lessons.
What could I go on to do at the end of the course?
A geographical education develops knowledge and skills useful for careers in Administration, Computer Programming and Systems Analysis, Education, Finance, General Management, Librarianship, International Aid and Development Services, Landscape Architecture, Marketing and Sales and Personnel. Geography provides an ideal framework for relating to other fields of knowledge. It is not surprising that those trained as Geographers often contribute substantially to the applied management of resources and environments. Geography is a facilitating subject, allowing students to move on to a wide range of future choices.
