Course Summary

This is a two year course which will result in a single A Level. This can be taken in a combination with other level 3 courses (including A level and vocational).

If taken, students will need to choose two other level 3 qualifications and will be requested to do our mandatory enrichment programme. This programme covers a range of different employment skills, other qualifications and experiences that students can use for their post 18 destinations.

Course Details

Students will:

  • develop and apply their understanding of geographical concepts and processes to understand and interpret our changing world;
  • develop their awareness of the complexity of interactions within and between societies, economies, cultures and environments at scales from local to global;
  • develop as global citizens who recognise the challenges of sustainability and the implications for their own and others’ lives;
  • improve as critical and reflective learners aware of the importance of attitudes and values, including their own;
  • become adept in the use and application of skills and new technologies through their geographical studies both in and outside the classroom;
  • be inspired by the world around them, and gain enjoyment and satisfaction from their geographical studies and understand their relevance.

Syllabus components:

Unit 1: Physical Environments (external assessment) This is a written exam worth 40% of the overall grade examining the following subjects: Water and Carbon Cycles, Coastal Landscapes and Systems and Hazards.

Unit 2: Human Environments (external assessment) This is a written exam worth 40% of the overall grade examining the following subjects: Changing Places, Global Systems and Global Governance, Resource Security.

Unit 3: Non-Examined Assessment (coursework) Students complete an individual investigation which must include data collected in the field. This must be based on a question or issue defined and developed by the student relating to any part of the specification content.

There is also an opportunity for four-days of fieldwork included within the course and the opportunity for UK and world-wide travel, with the possibility of another USA trip being planned.

20% coursework, 80% examination

Grade 6 in GCSE Geography.

This is a contemporary specification developed in consultation with the Geographical Association, Royal Geographical Society and leading universities.

A-level Geography will provide the opportunity for students to develop the study skills and knowledge necessary to lead to a range of possible career choices in the future. There are many career paths to be chosen with A Level Geography as it is well recognised in many career fields and a subject which shows relevance to the current world, with the development of a range of skills.
