Course Summary
The primary aim of the BTEC National in Health and Social Care is to provide a comprehensive, career-focused education for students aspiring to work in the health or social care sectors. This Level 3 qualification equips learners with the specialised knowledge and practical skills needed for progression into higher education (like nursing or social work) or direct employment. A key objective is to develop reflective, independent learners by bridging the gap between theory and practice through essential topics and synoptic tasks.
Course Details
The course content is built around three mandatory units: Human Lifespan Development (covering physical, intellectual, emotional, and social growth and effective care); Human Biology and Health (exploring the body's normal functioning and the effects of common disorders); and Principles of Care (foundational practices for meeting individual support needs). Additionally, students complete one optional unit, such as Promoting Public Health or Providing Safe Environments.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
The qualification is assessed via a 50% external assessment and a 50% internal assessment.
External Assessment: Two externally marked exams (1 hour 45 minutes each) based on Human Lifespan and Development and Human Biology and Health.
Internal Assessment: Students complete assignments and tasks that demonstrate applied knowledge from across their learning.
Entry requirements
In addition to the general requirements for access to Level 3 courses, applicants are expected to have a grade 4 in English Language, Mathematics and Science and at least a Level 2 pass in Health and Social Care if it was taken as an option.
