Student profile

This course is for students who want to further develop their studies from the GCSE Religious Studies Course. Students who have not studied Religious Studies will be considered but should have a desire to develop:

- an inquiring, analytical and empathetic approach to the study of religion

- an informed understanding of the diversity of world religions

- a respectful awareness of the significance of the beliefs and practices to individuals.

- an understanding of how religion affects people’s lives

- a global appreciation of the issues surrounding religious and spiritual beliefs

- responsible and informed international citizenship.

Why this course?

The World Religions course is a systematic, analytical yet empathetic study of the variety of beliefs and practices encountered in nine main religions of the world. This course seeks to promote an awareness of religious issues in the contemporary world. Skills developed: knowledge and understanding, application and analysis, synthesis and evaluation, thinking and research skills, comprehension, text analysis, use of primary sources, ability to formulate arguments clearly, ability to make reasoned judgments.

Assessment on the course is both internal and external. The external element consists of two written exam papers and accounts for 75% of the final grade.

External Assessment:

Paper 1: Introduction to World Religions 1.25 hours 30%. Paper 2: In-Depth Studies 1.5 hours 45%.

Internal Assessment:

The internal assessment is a written investigative study of an aspect of the religious experience, practice or belief of a group and/or individual adherents. It should focus around why people do what they do and/or believe what they believe. It accounts for 25% of the final grade.

GENERIC IB ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 5 GCSE'S 4-9, including English Language

SUBJECT SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Grade 4 in GCSE Religious Studies. We will consider students who have not taken GCSE Religious Studies but have a Grade 5 in GCSE English Literature and a passion for the subject.

Undergraduate studies in Religion, Philosophy and/or Ethics. A qualification in World Religion doesn’t limit you to just this subject area, it can lead to other opportunities such as: teaching, police work, social work, civil service, charity officer, youth worker and many more!
