Information Technology (IT), Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma (Level 3)

Year 1

Unit 6: Application Design: this is the process of designing a product and you follow the industry standard protocols for this from design, creation and testing whilst staying true to the client brief. All solutions are presented to a client for feedback.

Unit 21: Web Design Prototyping

This is where students learn and create a responsive website using HTML, CSS and java script. The website will also link via PHP to a webserver.

Unit 1: Fundamentals on IT (exam). This is where students learn basics of IT such as hard ware, software used in industry and how to construct computers from scratch. In addition, students are taught industry job requirements, behaviours, ethical issues in IT and learn what the expectations are in the world of IT work.

Year 2

Unit 2: Global Information (exam) This unit will provide students with a greater understanding of how organisations use information sources both internally and externally and the types of information you will encounter. The skills gained by completing this unit will give you knowledge of the functionality of information and how data is stored and processed by organisations.

Unit 15: Games Design and Prototyping, students learn how games are made, they will plan, create and test using industry standards a game of their own creation.

The Cambridge Technical provides students with the skills required in the work place, the course was designed by industry professionals in conjunction with the OCR exam board. The course also has employer involvement and is a Technical qualification. This is recognised by universities and prepares students for university by developing their independence and research skills. The course is client focused and helps students understand how to work for a client and how to meet industry requirements and can lead to students applying for apprentice positions. The course also allows for good multimedia design through web design and game making.

This also gives students an opportunity to choose an ICT related course at a university due to the wide breadth they will have studied at level 3. Applicants should be aware that some computer science university degrees require mathematics or science at level 3. They should research these using the UCAS and university websites before making their choices.

Students will have the skills to work in an office environment by the time they have finished the course. If students are more confident with the multimedia side of the course they can also become graphic designers, programmers, app developers, web designers or animators.
