Mathematics is a creative discipline. The language of Mathematics is international. The subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised.

AS - The course begins with a focus on improving the algebra skills of all students before using and applying these skills in the areas of coordinate geometry and basic calculus. In Pure Core 2 students extend the ideas learnt in the Pure Core 1 and discover some of the mathematics behind sequences and series, trigonometry, exponential and logarithmic functions. The third module, Mechanics 1, is split up into the topics kinematics in one and two dimensions, statics and forces, momentum, Newton’s laws of motion, connected particles and projectiles. A2 - Pure Core 3 continues to extend the topics learnt in Pure Core 2, with a particular emphasis on calculus, including volumes of revolution and numerical methods of integration and iteration. Pure Core 4, again, is an extension of the other core modules with vector geometry. The final module is known as Decision 1. The topics are simple ideas of algorithms, graphs and networks, spanning tree problems, matchings, shortest paths in networks, route inspection problem, travelling salesperson problem, linear programming and mathematical modelling.

Students who are predicted either a 7 or above at GCSE Mathematics.

An A Level in Mathematics is highly regarded by all employers and universities, precisely because of the demands it makes and the skills it develops. Degrees in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Accounting and Actuarial Science will require a good grade in A Level Mathematics.
