General Entry Requirements:

Our level 3 Sixth Form entry requirements are five GCSEs at Grades 9-4 including Maths and English minimum Grade 4. However, please read the course information, which, provides specific details of course content and entry requirements.

For level 2 courses please read the course information.

Subjects: -

Level 3 - Enter your choices in order of preference for Level 3 courses. Students need to select the equivalent of 3 courses (Triple counts as 3), with 2 reserve options if selecting Level 3 courses. Year 12 are expected to study the equivalent of three subjects. Once we close to applicants on the 6 February the options selected will be reviewed and if required we will be in contact.

Level 2 - just add the course required, eg beauty, finance or fitness. However, please look up all entry requirements for individual subjects as some subjects require specific subjects and grades.

Timetable Blocks- Please read carefully: Level 3 Courses Please select 3 subjects and 2 reserve subjects by placing them in a ranked order/ or a Pathway. Once applications close we will review all subjects requested and may be in contact at this time to discuss your chosen subjects further.

Additional optional qualifications such as Arts Award (Gold),Core Maths, Further Maths and the EPQ are not applied for at the Kent Choice stage further information will be provided in the 6th Form induction if you would like to undertake this course in addition to your core qualifications.

Course Summary

During the course students will analyse a range of media products from nine media forms: Advertising and Marketing, Music Videos, Radio, Newspapers, Magazines, Film, Television, Video Games and Online media.
Students will engage with a variety of texts, studying and applying the four areas of the theoretical framework:
Media Language- A study of genre codes and conventions, exploring how meaning is created.
Media Representation- The way events, issues and individuals are represented in the media.
Media Industries- A study into the institutions creating texts: ownership, production, distribution and circulation.
Media Audiences- Looking at how audiences are grouped and categorised and the changing role of audiences.
Students will explore wider contexts through the study of texts, from different historical periods and global settings whilst gaining an understanding of emerging and future developments of the media.

Course Details

Theoretical skills including critical exploration, analysis and debate as well as practical skills including filming and editing using professional software. Students will develop an understanding of the role of the media in today’s society developing an informed understanding of media concepts and theories along with key issues and debates. Students will also develop an understanding of wider contexts socially, politically, historically and economically it is therefore imperative that students have a good understanding of current events and are regularly immersing themselves in media content and coverage of news events.

Extra-curricular activities such as visits to Cabin Radio Herne Bay, where students research local events, sport, television, and film, and presents their findings live on air. Industry guest speakers. Links with the BFI who offer a range of workshops for students. The department supports students in gaining valuable work experience through their ever-growing contacts within different media industries, including local advertising agencies providing work experience and alumni students offering mentoring.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment – Coursework and examination

Component 1- Media Products, Industries and Audiences 35% In Section A students analyse Media Language and Representation. In Section B students investigate Media Industries and Audiences

Component 2- Media Forms and Products in Depth 35% This paper will focus on the study of in-depth media of Television in the Global Age, magazines- Mainstream and Alternative Media and Media in the Online Age

Component 3- Creating a Cross Media Production non exam assessment 30%

Students will respond a choice of media production briefs, applying their knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework in the creation of a media product made for an intended audience.

Entry requirements

2 Year Course - Normally 5 GCSE grades in the range of 9-4, including English (minimum Grade 4). It would be beneficial for candidates to have studied a Creative Arts subject but not essential.

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as English or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Media Studies, which could lead onto higher education to study Media, related courses within the Arts an Humanities, or more general higher education courses. With Further training, you could go into a job related to media such as a Journalist, News Reporter, TV Producer, Public Relations Officer You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the media and Communication sectors. You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as English, to prepare for higher education in Media-related courses, related courses in the Arts or Humanities, or more general higher education courses. With Further training, you could go into a job related to media such as a Journalist, News Reporter, TV Producer, Public Relations Officer The course also helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the media and Communication sectors.
