Course Summary

The course is designed to extend the GCSE skills of Performing, Composing and Appraising in ways that emphasise their interdependence. The widest possible range of music, including folk, popular and classical traditions of non- Western origin as well as those of jazz and Western classical and popular traditions, is studied.

Course Details

AS - The course begins with the study of Western Tonal Harmony, focussing on standard chord progressions. Prescribed works are studied alongside a broad range of music from 1600 to the present day, preparing candidates for the completion of composition tasks and a recital on their chosen instrument. A2 - The understanding of Western Tonal Harmony is developed by exploring more complex chords, tonal relationships and also non-tonal techniques of composition. Each A2 unit builds directly on the equivalent unit studied at AS and the skills of Performance, Composition and Appraising are developed to the highest possible level.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Unique to this specification performing is assessed by a visiting examiner at both AS and A2 levels. The candidate’s involvement in all aspects of their performance is assessed through a viva voce at A2. Composing is assessed by a portfolio submission at both AS and A2 levels.
