Entry Requirements: Our general entry requirements are:-

• A Levels – advanced courses, two year study programme, with an average entry requirement of at least five grade 5+ qualifications, including English and mathematics. Some subjects may have additional entry requirements.

• BTEC Level 3 – advanced courses, two year study programme, with an average entry requirement of at least five grade 4+ qualifications, including English and mathematics. Some subjects may have additional entry requirements.

• T Level - technical course, two year study programme, with an average entry requirement of at least five grade 5+ qualifications, including English and mathematics.

• BTEC Level 2 – One year programme, which could lead on to further studies, with an average entry requirement at least five grade 2 or above, including English and mathematics.

Course Summary

Course aims

Students complete a number of units adding up to 90 credits in their chosen discipline (Performance/Technology). Many units overlap which means that regardless of their discipline, they will be given opportunities to work on the tasks of the other discipline also. There is one external assessment. The course aims to give a broad variety of experiences to all students to allow them to make informed decisions on their future path.

Course content

Students will focus on one of two strands: Performance or Technology. The course is modular, with each strand having three mandatory modules. Each strand includes a module on establishing a career in music, as well as topics ranging from creative collaboration to recording to developing a more musical ear. Topics covered can be (but are not limited to)

  • Planning a Career in Music (Internal Core)
  • Rehearsal Skills and Live Music Performance (External Core)
  • Live Sound Recording and Sound Reinforcement (External Core)
  • Music Video Production
  • Live Sound Engineering - Front of House
  • Lighting for Music Events
  • Session Musician
  • Auditioning for Music

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment

The course is entirely coursework based. 33% of the coursework is externally assessed, the remainder is internally assessed, with portions sent to external moderation. There is no written examination.

Music at KS4 is preferable but not necessary. Being able to play an instrument is beneficial. Technology pathway is an option for those who wish to look further into Sound Engineering and Lighting.
