Studying Physics at a higher level aims to encourage learners to:

• develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other

• develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods

• develop competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem-solving skills

• develop their interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, including developing an interest in further study and careers associated with the subject

• understand how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society.

• Section 1 - Measurements and their errors

• Section 2 - Particles and radiation

• Section 3 - Waves

• Section 4 - Mechanics and materials

• Section 5 – Electricity

Year 2

• Section 6 - Further mechanics and thermal physics

• Section 7 - Fields and their consequences

• Section 8 - Nuclear physics

• Section 9 - Option section from; Astrophysics, medical physics, Engineering physics, Turning points in physics, electronics

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment

1. Sections 1-5 and 6.1(Periodic motion) - written exam: 2 hours - 60 marks of short and long answer questions and 25 multiple choice questions

2. Sections 7, 8 and 6.2(Thermal physics) - written exam 2 hours - 60 marks of short and long answer questions and 25 multiple choice questions

3. Section 1-8 practical skills and data analysis and Option section - written exam: 2 hours - 45 marks of short and long answer questions and 35 marks of short and long answer questions on the optional topic

Practical endorsement for physics – minimum of 12 practical activities completed over the 2 years

Entry requirements

Five GCSE at Grade 4 or above (including English). Combined Science Grade 6-5 or above / Physics Grade 5 or above. Grade 6 in Mathematics. Grade 5 in Mathematics may be considered after consultation with the Curriculum Leader for Science.
